Stucco In Major Decors in France and Europe

AUDITORIUM PALISSY – C2RMF
Conference organized by a new research group on stucco decoration in large French residences from the Renaissance to the 19th century, with the support of the Foundation for Heritage Sciences, the Center for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France, the Research center of the Palace of Versailles, the National Museum of the Palace of Fontainebleau and the National Museum of the Palaces of Versailles and Trianon.

The objective of these days is to take stock of current research, advances in the fields of restoration and scientific analysis, discoveries made during recent restoration projects and define research objects. multidisciplinary.

The use of stucco in Antiquity and the Middle Ages has aroused the interest of art historians and French heritage scientists. On the other hand, except in the Provençal and Languedoc sphere, where the university environment is particularly active on the subject of decorations, stucco remains a field of study that is still too little explored in France for the period from the Renaissance to the 19th century.

However, the vast subject of stucco is experiencing a certain enthusiasm in Europe, as evidenced by the Centro Studi per la Storia dello Stucco in Età Moderna e Contemporanea, the publications of the Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed of the Netherlands, the conferences organized by the Low Countries Sculpture Society and by the University of Pardubice, Czech Republic.

The Mazarin gallery at the National Library of France, the bedroom of the Duchess of Étampes, the François I gallery and the Porte Dorée in Fontainebleau, the Apollo gallery and the summer apartment of Anne of Austria at the Louvre or the Hall of Mirrors and Diane's Salon at Versailles are all recent or ongoing restoration campaigns which partly concern stucco. They are an opportunity to highlight the issue of stucco in the great French stucco decorations, from the Renaissance to the 19th century.
