Pixel Paintings

In the Notre-Dame-des-Fontaines chapel, near Nice, a team of interdisciplinary researchers is studying frescoes dating from the 15th century, to understand the mechanisms of degradation and thus better restore them.

This initiative is part of the Fiat Lux project, the aim of which is to collect a large number of images and information to bring them together in a digital platform. Using different imaging techniques, these researchers will be able to reconstruct the works in 3D, know their relief, distinguish successive repaints or even recognize the chemical elements of the pictorial material. This film also follows the stages of restoration of the triptych of Vénasque and the altarpiece of the Trinity, in the CICRP laboratories, and the contribution of the various tools for image processing and chemical analysis of materials. Thanks to these digital doubles, art historians, curators, restorers and scientists will be able to follow the evolution of these works over time, in order to better preserve them.
